The Department of Computing and Mathematics offers a network of computing courses which allow you to tailor your degree to your own strengths and career aspirations. With a wide range of pathways and units to choose from, you can develop the skills and knowledge you need for the future.
Our Computing degrees are aimed at equipping you to work as a Professional in any one of a large number of different Computing Industry roles. The scope really is very broad; from the very technical areas of System Software and Scientific Programming through to more people oriented work as a Systems Analysis or Systems Administration.
Most of our courses incorporate a one year Industrial Work Placements option and this allows you to gain valuable employment experience. Our links with industry through the Placements Scheme and through collaborative research partnerships ensure that our courses are constantly updated to provide relevant skills and excellent employment opportunities.
Our graduates are eligible for full membership of the British Computer Society (BCS) which is the professional body for IT and a Chartered Engineering Institute. Accredited course status ensures a high standard of teaching and relevant skills.
The department has a wide range of specialist Computing Laboratories and a Virtual Learning Environment (WebCT) is used extensively to provide modern teaching and learning facilities.
Most of our degree courses share a common first year. During your first year you will be given a broad grounding in computing topics such as programming, computer architecture, and information systems. You will also be introduced to the specialist area of your choice whatever that may be; for example Software Engineering, Multimedia or Computer Games Technology.
Subsequently you specialise much more in your chosen subject area. This might be the degree subject that you chose when you first joined the department. Alternatively it may be an area that you would like to move into having discovered what aspect of Computing you most enjoy.
